The Graduate Program in Linguistic Studies (PPGEL) at the Master’s and Doctoral degrees aims to prepare highly qualified educators and researchers for careers in higher education, focusing on teaching, research, and extension activities in the field of Linguistics. PPGEL is a result of CAPES’ policy to decentralize research and graduate level education. In the State of Santa Catarina, graduate programs have traditionally been concentrated along the coast. In the field of Language and Linguistics, PPGEL is the only stricto sensu graduate program in the state, with other programs located at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) and the University of Southern Santa Catarina (Unisul), both in Florianópolis and its metropolitan area. In the Greater Mercosur Frontier Mesoregion – comprising 396 municipalities and home to six UFFS campuses – PPGEL is the only public stricto sensu graduate program in the area of Language and Linguistics. In addition to PPGEL, the only other stricto sensu postgraduate program in this field is offered at the University of Passo Fundo, a community higher education institution in the northwest of Rio Grande do Sul. Due to the historical concentration of stricto sensu graduate programs in seaside areas, the complex linguistic landscape of Santa Catarina’s countryside and the Greater Mercosur Frontier Mesoregion remains largely unexplored. This gap has significant socioeconomic implications for the region. PPGEL’s research activities, while maintaining a universal scientific approach, focusing on understanding local languages, language contact phenomena, and discourse practices that shape social structures and regional development. Aligned with the IV National Graduate Plan (PNPG), which aims to reduce regional and disciplinary disparities in graduate education level, PPGEL plays a crucial role in expanding research opportunities and fostering academic development in underserved areas. The implementation of PPGEL contributes to training and retaining researchers, strengthening higher education teaching, and promoting regional development. Moreover, through initiatives such as the Senior National Visitor Program (PVNS/CAPES Call 6/2012), PPGEL has attracted experienced scholars, further integrating the program with the academic community and enhancing language studies in the region. Admission to the PPGEL is open to candidates who have completed an undergraduate degree recognized by MEC, at home and/or abroad, or conditionally, to applicants who prove, by means of a certificate or statement from a Higher Education Institution, that they have completed or are about to complete their undergraduate course. Each admissions process offers 24 seats in the Master’s Degree and 12 seats in the Doctoral Degree in Linguistic Studies every year. This confirms the Program’s role in integrating with the community and strengthening language studies on and in the region.

Research Area and Concentration

PPGEL has a single area of concentration – Linguistics – which encompasses three research lines:

1. Discursive Practices and Subjectivities: Investigates meaning-making and subject formation through discourse analysis, exploring policies, signification processes, and subjectivity construction across diverse semiotic materiality. This line engages with the research group “Language, Discourse, and Subjectivity.”

2. Linguistic Diversity and Language Change: Examines linguistic variation and change in Brazilian Portuguese, as well as bilingualism and language contact situations in the Greater Mercosur Frontier Mesoregion and surrounding areas. This line is linked to the research group “Geo-Sociolinguistic Studies in the Greater Southern Frontier Mesoregion.”

3. Language and Cognition: Representation and Processing: Focuses on the relationship between language and cognition, including theoretical and experimental studies on linguistic processing and the representation of linguistic structures at semantic, syntactic, and/or lexical levels. This line includes the research groups “Grammar Studies” and “Learning and Processing of First and Second Languages.”

Strengthen the integration of teaching, research, and extension projects.

Foster connections between undergraduate and graduate programs to reinforce academic development.
